Roy Daniel Delfin – Customer Service Representative, ESL
I have been staring at the center of the four corners of this ‘paper’ for too long, I have lost track of time. Where do I begin? Let’s start with the basics. My name is Roy Daniel Delfin. My colleagues call me ‘Daniel’ or ‘Dan’. Family and close friends call me ‘Bordz’ which would take me another ‘sheet of paper’ to explain! Everyone from school since kindergarten up until college called me ‘Roy’. It always felt like Roy had so many limitations and has always played inside this little sandbox he calls his comfort zone. So before landing my first job, I thought it would be a great opportunity for a clean slate and that was when I decided to introduce myself as ‘Daniel’. It might not have been a great achievement at that time, but it felt like I was a whole new person and that I was ready to leave everything behind to become this new persona, and so I did.
I’m 25 years old now. The eldest child of 3 siblings. Being in my mid 20’s probably explains why I constantly feel the pressure of achieving bigger milestones. Endlessly, I keep reminding myself: time is something I can’t afford at this stage in life. People would usually say I’m still too young but somehow I feel like I am running out of time. Everyone else is moving at such a fast pace and here I am in my own timeline, taking baby steps, making as many mistakes, and risking everything to be the best version of myself before I turn 30.
The things I treasure the most are my experiences from work and all the lessons I could never have learned if I stayed inside that little sandbox. In teaching, I have mastered patience, and being a good role model. I have also observed that young children are like sponges, they absorb everything so fast. Not only will they learn from the books and the lessons we discuss, they will also learn values, good and bad. In being a part of the customer support team, I have learned that active listening is key and that sometimes you have to come up with the most creative ways to help solve the most challenging issues. I have nothing but respect for everyone in these fields that I share the same experiences with. Now, here I am, about to dive-in head first into uncharted waters.
I am the type of person who has constantly been open to trying new things, always choosing the path not taken, always eager to make new mistakes, and challenge myself to see where I go from there. I want to grow more as a person. Always reminding myself “I am a glass, still half-empty”. All my mistakes from the past made me who I am today. I wake up everyday knowing that with all the lessons I have learned from the past, I am the best version of myself today and always a better version tomorrow.
