Evalyne Nthiga – General Virtual Assistant
Hello! My name is Evalyne Nthiga, many people call me Eve, which is what I am used to. I graduated in 2020 with a Degree in Actuarial Science from Mount Kenya University (MKU) in Kenya. While growing up and in my early schooling, my talent in mathematics could not be hidden, and this went on up until high school, where I scored an A in mathematics. This automatically led me to choosing a course in the line of mathematics, and this is how I landed in an Actuarial Science class.
In my university days, I joined various societies and clubs, and was nominated as the Organising secretary in the Actuarial Science Club, and later become the campus representative in the National Club, Actuarial Science Students’ Society of Kenya (ASSK). This is when I realised that other than being a mathematics guru, I also possess leadership skills. My duties in these two roles revolved around organising club events, liaising with the administration to implement Actuarial Science plans and goals, sourcing corporate talks for the students, setting up meetings and taking minutes.
When I graduated, I had big goals of how I’d thrive in the Actuarial Industry, little did I know that it is a path I wouldn’t take for long. In January of 2021, I started my internship in a government parastatal (Kenya Revenue Authority), which later transitioned to a contract. I was posted in a department that was rolling out a new revenue collection system for the Nairobi City County Government. My duties here were majorly marketing of the new revenue system using tools like telemarketing & email marketing. I also took part in piloting the new system through customer onboarding and testing, helping customers apply for their licenses, generating invoices, sending bulk emails, responding to customer queries raised via emails, calls and even walk-ins. It is in this position that I realised that I can thrive in business support roles.
Being my first 8-5 job, I would enjoy the work and the duties, but not really the nature of work. I thrive in collaborative environments as well as in individualistic environments. After my contract ended in December 2022, I got another hybrid job with a technology company, where I was in charge of appointment setting, answering customer questions regarding system use, managing calendars, projects’ research, project management among other tasks.
It was in this job that I realised that truly, I need a work from home job. This urge led me to resigning from my position towards the end of the year, since I was also getting caught up with family demands. At this time, I already knew of virtual assistant roles, so I started browsing and doing research on how the virtual assistance industry operates. While applying for jobs, I did three VA certifications from Alison: Working as a VA, Executive Assistant Skills, and Administrative Assistant Training. These certifications equipped me with a wide array of skills that I need to thrive as a VA, ranging from VA soft skills, Clients’ management, Confidentiality guidelines, etc.
Within a very short while, I got my first part-time VA job in December of 2023 with 20four7va. This is where I started experiencing what it means to be a VA. Through this experience and my previous experiences, I have honed my skills in Administrative support, Customer Support, Appointment setting, Meeting coordination, data entry, data analysis, report writing and many more.
What I like most about being a VA is that I am able to enjoy a work life balance, and I am also able to make a living while still being present for my family. Virtual assistance is not just a career for me, but a passion. My goal right now is to grow and continue honing my skills in the Virtual Assistance Industry, while still utilising my skills to serve clients, and helping them meet the agenda of their businesses.
