Desirie Libutlibut – Medical Virtual Assistant, Travel Consultant

Hi, I’m Desirie Libutlibut, but you can just call me Rie. I am a senior high school graduate from the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue. Four years ago, the pandemic hit, which resulted in losing my family’s junk shop business. As an 18-year-old girl who dreams of going to college to pursue psychology, I have decided to pause my education in order to help my family.

I started working as an outbound caller at a call centre, where I did cold calling to CEOs of companies to offer our products. Then, I worked as a Travel Consultant, mainly booking flight schedules and itineraries. I also served as a customer service representative for a healthcare insurance company, assisting patients. Since my workplace was a two-hour drive from home, I decided to resign from my on-site job to look for work-from-home opportunities. I discovered the role of a virtual assistant and chose to specialise in medical VA services, as I already have a background in the healthcare industry.

Starting to work at an early age and being exposed to the adult world helped me master the flexibility to adapt to any changes. I pick things up quickly and can work in different areas. I do well on my own or in a team. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with my coworkers to help create a positive work environment. My experiences have also taught me the importance of communication and collaboration, enabling me to build strong relationships with colleagues. I’m hard-working, focused on goals, detail-oriented and resourceful.

For the past years that I’ve been working, I’ve realised having a work-from-home job is truly a blessing. It has given me the chance to spend more time with my family and manage my schedule. I can work in a comfortable space and avoid long commutes, which helps reduce stress. This flexibility has allowed me to be more focused and productive, making it easier to balance both my work and personal life.

If I were to ask my 18-year-old self if I see myself having the job I have now, my answer would definitely be no. But hey, they say when life throws you lemons, make lemonade. I’m still a work in progress and have a lot to learn. In the coming days, months, and years, I aim to advance in my career and gain new skills and knowledge to improve myself while maintaining a work-life balance.
