Charmaine Ebrado – Property Maintenance Work Order Specialist, Administrative Support

My journey as a virtual assistant began during one of the most challenging times for many—amidst the pandemic. Prior to that, I was working in the BPO industry, where I gained valuable experience in customer service and communication over the years. I enjoyed my job and the fast-paced environment of the call centre. However, when I got pregnant, I made the difficult decision to resign and focus on my growing family. Little did I know that shortly after my resignation, the world would change drastically with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sudden lockdowns and restrictions meant that jobs were scarce, and the traditional workplace I had been so accustomed to was no longer an option. It was a difficult time, not just for me, but for millions of others who were facing uncertainty. With a baby on the way, my responsibilities were growing, and I knew I needed to find a way to support my family.

I had no prior knowledge or experience with remote work, but I was determined to learn and adapt. I started researching online opportunities, looking into remote roles that would allow me to work from home while still caring for my family. I quickly realised that the world of virtual assistants was booming, with businesses and entrepreneurs looking for support as they, too, adapted to the new normal. Even though I was unfamiliar with many of the tools and processes required for virtual work, I didn’t let that stop me.

I applied for job after job, even when I didn’t meet every qualification. I watched online tutorials, took free courses, and asked questions in virtual communities to learn the ropes. Eventually, after many applications, I landed my first role as a virtual assistant. I used my skills from the BPO industry—especially my communication abilities, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills—to quickly pick up on what was needed.

In one of my roles as a Property Maintenance Coordinator, I learned to use software like Simpro to manage work orders and keep things organised. I handled scheduling, tracked job progress, and ensured that everything ran smoothly for the clients I supported.

Through sheer determination and a willingness to learn, I transitioned from being a complete novice in remote work to successfully building a career as a virtual assistant. It wasn’t easy, but my family was my driving force, and that kept me pushing forward. Today, I am grateful for the flexibility and opportunities that being a VA has provided me, especially during such uncertain times.
