Caroline Cauton – Copywriter, Graphic Designer, Virtual Assistant
I started freelance copywriting in 2019. While I am a nurse by profession, I followed my passion for writing. Since primary school, I have always dreamt of writing my own book. I love reading, which sparked my interest in writing at a young age. I often expressed my thoughts through poems, letting my curiosity and creativity guide me.
In 2019, when my son was only two years old, I was in a difficult predicament. I was in an abusive relationship and struggling financially. I had been unemployed for three years and couldn’t find the courage to leave my son with a babysitter, as I had no job to support us. Back then, my ex-husband was the sole provider in the family. He constantly makes side comments about being the only person who can provide and is always exhausted because he brings food to the table. It was a wake-up call for me.
During this challenging time, someone reached out to me through Facebook. He noticed my posts, because I was selling my pre-loved items, some pastries I ordered online (reselling), and Filipino delicacies, and asked if I wanted to use my skills in Facebook ads.
This person became my mentor, helping me rediscover my confidence and believe in my abilities. His support reignited my passion for marketing and writing, giving me the push I needed to pursue freelancing. After 2 weeks under the programme, I landed my first client. I didn’t earn much because I was only paid $2 per hour at that time. My main task was to create product descriptions for a product on Amazon. I didn’t mind the low pay because I was overwhelmed with success.
Yes, it was already a success since I already earned my own money. And from there, I never stopped believing. I pushed harder and didn’t let any criticisms and hardship stop me from achieving my goal — to be independent financially and provide for my son.
Many of my friends and former colleagues suggested I return to the hospital setting, but I knew that wasn’t the path I wanted. I enjoy what I do now because it allows me to be present for my son, watching him grow, while still earning a living for both of us. The flexibility of remote work has been a blessing and is one of the main reasons I continue working as a Virtual Assistant. It has allowed me to balance being a mother and a professional without sacrificing either role.
Now, I’m searching for a team that will help me continue to grow, both professionally and personally. I believe that with the right support and environment, I can achieve even more while continuing to nurture my family and my career.
