Joan Dizon – Administrative Assistant
Hi there! My name is Joan from the Philippines. I graduated with a degree in Business Management back in 2003. Though it was not easy, being a working student supported my way through college by working in restaurants. My parents died when I was young and although I have other siblings, we went our own ways to survive.
When I finished my Bachelor’s degree, I started to work in a bank as a Branch Support Assistant handling bill payments, remittances, payroll, and supplier payments and assisting branches nationwide. Despite it being a stable job and a good career, I wanted to try something new, so I went overseas to work in a hotel at W Hotel Doha. I started as a Welcome Desk agent handling the check-in and check-out of guests, then I did cross-training on my off days so I can gain knowledge in Finance and back-support office. Then an opportunity for an Accounts Payable position opened and I became part of the Finance department.
In 2011, I decided to resign because of personal reasons. I needed to go back home to give birth to my first born son. After 2 years, I came back to Doha and worked in St. Regis Hotel Doha as Accounts Payable, but then I had to resign again to take care of my growing family. My last full-time job was in a wellness clinic as an Accounting and Administrative supervisor; my role included general administrative tasks, handling and supervising the cashiering, preparing Sales reports and other financial documents; HR-related functions such as recruitment, selection, on-boarding of employees.
I have already experienced virtual assistance jobs since 2012. I have worked with various US clients and handled several projects such as software testing, writing a product review, menu transcription, admin assistance for a supplement company.
The area that I need improvement in is public speaking. I am so bad at speaking to an audience. It is something that I need to overcome because it hinders me to speak my mind most of the time. Through the years of working, I have gained practical skills and flexibility. I have learned to handle things as they come. I am a reliable, committed person and will work at my best to provide a meaningful contribution to the company.
I am looking forward to a new role at an organization that will provide me with growth and development. I want to gain and develop a new skill set and prepare myself for other opportunities and larger responsibilities. My long-term goal is to keep on learning to become an expert in my field and prepare myself for managerial opportunities in the future by taking on a lead role on team projects that will help broaden my knowledge base.
